#5 Whisky Advocate Top 20 Whiskies of 2019

Aberlour whisky was born in the Speyside village of Aberlour, made with local spring water from the Ben Rinnes and barley, now locally sourced from the fields near the Aberlour distillery.

A'bunadh means 'The Original' in Gaelic because Aberlour makes every bottle as they would have done 100 years ago: in batches, with no chill-filtering.

A'bunadh Alba is as close as you can get to tasting a dram at original cask strength at the Aberlour distillery; full of intense flavors in every single drop. To mature the whisky, Aberlour uses barrels made of American Oak known as 'Quercus Alba'. They carefully fill them with Scotch Whisky for the first time. As the years pass, these casks infuse their sweet flavors into A'bunadh Alba.

The yin to Aberlour A’bunadh’s yang, this cask-strength single malt is matured entirely in bourbon casks rather than sherry. The result is a bracingly pure whisky with deceptive simplicity; its flavors are clean and its structure precise, but it’s far from boring. The nose recalls black-and-white cookies, vanilla-frosted yellow cake, and shortbread with caramel topping, along with honeysuckle, jasmine, and coconut cream. Mouth-coating and full, it has flavors of poached pear, malt balls, nougat, lemon curd, toasted coconut, and hints of spice. Vanilla, chocolate, and nut flavors are almost endless on the finish. Add water, or don’t: this is delicious either way. —Susannah Skiver Barton, Whisky Advocate
